Overall Rating

The Hoka Speedgoat 5 combines Hoka cushioning with aggressive trail capabilities. After 200 miles including a 50K ultra, here's my comprehensive review.

Cushioned Trail Running

The generous stack of cushioning absorbs technical terrain impact beautifully. Long trail runs feel comfortable, with reduced foot fatigue compared to minimal trail shoes.

Vibram Megagrip

The Vibram Megagrip outsole with 5mm lugs provides excellent traction on varied terrain. Confident on rock, roots, and moderate mud. Not as aggressive as Speedcross but more versatile.

Ultra Distance Comfort

Perfect for ultra distances where comfort matters. The cushioning enables covering big miles on challenging terrain. My 50K felt remarkably comfortable.

Wider Fit

The accommodating fit works well for wider feet and swelling during long runs. True to size with room in the toe box.

Pros

  • Excellent cushioning for long trails
  • Vibram Megagrip traction
  • Comfortable for ultra distances
  • Accommodating fit
  • Versatile across terrain types

Cons

  • Heavy for a trail shoe
  • High stack may feel less agile
  • Expensive at $155
  • Overkill for short, technical trails
